imiis New Hair

For millions of men and women everywhere who rely on hair extensions for glamorous yet manageable hairstyles, a traditional ‘weave’ (the sewing of wefts of hair onto the wearer's own hair); 'bonding' (the gluing of wefts of hair onto the wearer's own hair); or 'micro bonding' (the gluing of individual strands of hair onto the wearer's own hair); are popular options because they offer a more realistic look than other hair extension options. This is because the hair can be attached in such a way to incorporate a real parting into the hairstyle. This parting allows the wearer to reveal a bit of his/her own scalp and roots, so it looks like all of the hair is growing out of his/her head, adding an extra dimension of realism to the hairstyle. These options
, however, can bring with them several disadvantages. They can be very:-

  • Time consuming – these options are intricate and so take hours to put in. And clip-in pieces can become unruly and need replacing within hours…they are so high maintenance!
  • Expensive - because they involve the costs of the hair, and the costs of the labour of having the hair attached each time.
  • Expensive again – because the hair is not always re-useable and new hair has to be bought each time. For instance, if the wearer has had his/her weave cut into style, once the hair is removed to remove the style, s/he won’t be able to use the hair again to re-create the same style in the future: s/he would have to buy new hair.
  • Uncomfortable – the hair is sown, bonded or glued onto the wearer's own hair.
  • Hot – the hair can’t be removed at night to let the wearers' own hair or scalp breathe.
  • Itchy – with the scalp hidden under all that hair, there is always itchiness.
  • Tricky to maintain - bonded or micro bonded hair cannot be washed wihtout weakening the glue and having the hair fall out!  With a traditional weave, it is also very hard for the wearer to wash his/her own real hair and the attached hair thoroughly, without slackening or damaging the stitching. These can all be a long-term problems because after all the expense of having hair extensions put on and styled, the wearer will want to keep them in for as long as possible!
  • Unhygienic - no matter how often the hair is wash, it is hard for shampoo to get through the hair extensions and clean the wearer's own hair and scalp satisfactorily.

A wig in comparison is:-

  • Quick – it takes seconds to wear and remove.
  • Inexpensive - because it is only paid for once, yet it can be used again and again, even if it has been cut into style. And good wigs can last for years.
  • Flexible – it can be removed at night to let the wearer's own hair and scalp breathe.
  • a breeze to maintain – once the wig has been removed the wearer's own hair can be loosened anytime for thorough washing, and of course, the wig itself can be washed without damaging the style.

But existing wigs only deliver a complete head of hair at the expense of realism. Unnecessary fringes, outdated hair bands, plastic-looking fake scalps, enforced partings and suspiciously big hair are used to hide the stitching at the front. And because these features also conceal the wearer’s own roots and hairline, it is apparent that the hair is not really growing out of the head and is therefore fake.

Other wigs, such as ‘half wigs’ and ‘three-quarter wigs’ address this by allowing the wearer to leave out a substantial amount – half and one quarter respectively - of his or her own hair to blend in with the wig hair. However, having to leave out, care for, and style so much of your own hair can defeat the purpose of wearing a wig! And, although when viewed from the front both the half and three-quarter wigs give the impression that all the hair is real, the side view often tells a different story: it rarely conceals the bump that arises at the point where the attached hair begins!

'Lace fronts' (full wigs with lace caps that deliberately extend out of the front and sides of the wig, for attachment to the skin by glue), can offer realism but are typically custom-made and therefore expensive. Many wearers find them itchy and uncomfortable and many more react to the glues used to attach the lace front to the forehead. And because they are stuck on for many weeks or months at a time, wearers experience the same maintenance and hygiene problems as weave-on wearers.

A wig that somehow offers a real parting to reveal the wearer's own scalp is the solution, and this is where the innovative SimiWeave™ comes in. Made to a unique patent pending design, the SimiWeave™ features a real gap in the hairline, allowing the wearer to include a parting in the hairstyle, thereby revealing a bit of real scalp and roots. Whether the parting is on the left, in the centre, or on the right, it brings unbeatable realism to the hairstyle.

Thanks to it’s real parting, the SimiWeave™ delivers all the benefits of a traditional weave. But because it works like a wig, SimiWeave™ improves on a traditional weave in many ways.

  • It only takes a few seconds to put on and take off.
  • You only pay for it once and can use it again and again.
  • You don't have to have the hair sewn or glued onto your own hair either, so no need to worry about discomfort, headaches, or damage to your own hair.
  • You can take it off at night to let your own hair and scalp breathe, and wash your own hair as often and as thoroughly as you like.

And, because of its unique design, there are no bumps or any of the telltale signs you get with half or three-quarter wigs or other hair extensions. It is the first product to truly combine realism with glamour, and convenience with choice, and it has already changed peoples view on traditional weaves and wigs, forever.  It is already worn by many celebrities in complete secret!

Simi Belo,with her SimiWeave™ invention

The SimiWeave™ was created by Simi Belo (pictured), who had always been keen to improve the products available for women. Even though plaiting and weaving hair had been a hobby of hers for over twenty-five years, she still hadn’t found the ideal solution to all of her daily hair requirements. She needed something she could use and maintain at home herself. It had to be quick and easy to use. And it had to look real.

She loved the look that could be achieved from traditional weaves, but was totally fed up with all the time, effort and costs involved; the headaches and itchiness, and the damage to her own scalp and hair. She didn’t like wigs because, as far as she was concerned, you could spot a wig a mile away! Relaxing her hair was not an option – her hair still hadn’t fully recovered from the last time she used such chemicals, in 1998. And she had accepted a long time ago that she no longer had the time or patience to sit still and have intricate extensions put in, like single plaits or twists.

In 2003, whilst running her successful PR agency Guru PR, she finally managed to develop her favourite idea, the SimiWeave™ (previously called NewHair™). To produce, market and sell the SimiWeave™, she set up a new company called Imiis Limited and launched the SimiWeave™ in the UK in January 2004.  It was then launched in October 2004 in North America by exclusive licensee Especially Yours. Availability in southern mainland Europe, Africa, West Africa and The Caribbean has followed since.

Heralded as ‘a new invention set to take the hairdressing world by storm’ by industry-leading magazine Black Beauty & Hair, the SimiWeave™ has been an overnight success amongst customers, celebrities, retailers, hair and beauty experts, the media and retailers alike. Simi, her SimiWeave™ patented design, and her company Imiis Limited, have already won many awards (see left panel). For further information please visit www.simibelo.com
